Neighborhood: HillcrestNot much to add about the food (delicious), but I found the service a bit slow. Like it took almost 10 minutes for my food to be boxed up and the check to be brought out.
Other than that, it was good.
Art Salad. The 3 of us simultaneously orgasmed eating this amazing creation.
My next meal here will just be this salad alone.
Just you and me, Art. Just you and... ME.
(And for those who need to know what this salad consists of...
Art $7.99
Roasted eggplant, broccoli, bell peppers, zucchini, and marinated mock duck, tossed in lime vinaigrette, on a bed of fresh greens)

Wow. This was seriously amazing. They definitely have the best lunch specials I've ever seen. Only $4.99 for a huge pile of vegetables and cashews, brown rice, salad, soup, an eggroll, and some sort of fried triangle. I even had enough to take some home with me. Plus the service was really fast and the atmosphere was great. Josh and I sat outside and enjoyed the fresh flowers, cool breeze coming through the covered alley way, and the little decorated utensil holders. They even had heaters set up so you could sit out there at night comfortably. The dinner prices seemed a little high considering I can get an awesome meal at Bangkok Spices for $7, but I am definitely going to be coming back a lot to try ALL of their lunch specials.

I wanted to like this place a lot, I really did, but Amarin had some misses (well really only one miss, but it was a biggie), that warranted only three stars.
First of all, the place is beautiful. It's nicely decorated, and you get a real sense of luxury. Seating was comfortable, and the staff was friendly. I had a hard time choosing from their vast menu but ultimately settled on the Tom Kha soup and the Sea Boat entree.
The soup was flavorful and loaded with chicken. Unfortunately the main course the Sea Boat was bad. Even though there was a lot of seafood in the dish, and it was presented nicely, there was an off taste to most of the squid and one of the mussels. One of them probably being the main culprit ruining the entire dish. My companions both were pleased with their dishes. On being the drunken noodle with tofu, and the other being the choo-chi duck. I have the feeling there was some MSG in my dish, because I am starting to feel like I have a MSG headache....I guess that's probably my fault for not asking.
The Bananarama dessert, was really superb.
This place seems a bit more expensive than the other local Thai places, but it also reads a little more high end....their wine selection is really large and is presented nicely.
I'll give Amarin another try I suppose, but I think I'll avoid seafood, and ask about MSG content.
Hmm, I wish I loved it as much as the rest...I thought it was good but if I had to choose between Amarin and Saffron next door in Mission Hills I think it would be Saffron for sure...although Amarin does gets snaps for trying to improve their space in their little pop secret of a location. (Anyone who attempts to turn dingy sideyards into eating space w/ booths deserves at least one visit). Great pricing and great service would make us return though and order something new for a second review...
For a while, I was worried that I wouldn't find a place that would compare to a few of the Thai restaurants that I frequented, when living in the Bay Area. I was sadly disappointed that a few of the places that I've gone to think that pad thai should be soupy.
Pad. thai. should. not. be. soupy.
Then, I found Amarin Thai. It's been 5 years now, going on strong. I've yet to be disappointed.
There are many items to choose from. Curries. Grilled meats. Vegatarian. Can't really go wrong with this place. And, for your taste buds? An array of flavors from the herbs and spices used. Absolutely delicious. Absolutely flavorful. My first choice is always the tofu pad thai. For lunch, a pad thai lunch plate will cost you $5.99. It includes a veggie eggroll, a curry potato wonton and a side salad. Other favs include the appetizer sampler, eggplant tofu, chicken yellow curry and chicken tom kah soup. To top it all off, I like finishing my meal with a Thai iced tea.
The decor is simple and open. The staff wonderful and friendly. Just love it!!

I could write for days and days about all the lovely treats this place has to offer. I have yet to order anything that I didn't like and I have been here many a times!!! Tom Yum is Heavenly, Som Tum is a must, anthing with their scallops is a decision you won't regret.... oh my, and their banana dessert with their homemade coconut ice cream.... what a delight!
The only reason I gave it four stars is because the service is hit or miss. Even when it is a miss, it's is never bad enough to keep me away for too long! Definitely check this place out... they even have a half off wine list :)
The Thai food here is very pretty. It tastes pretty good too.
The best place though is their hole-in-the-wall Amarin express in Mira Mesa. That's what real Thai food should taste like.
Good food, fast service. Thai people rule.

Melinda and I decided we needed some Thai nourishment before T@T. She picked Amarin...good choice!
We arrived around 7 and were seated promptly at a table for two in their covered patio area. How romantic...if this was a date, I would have totally put out at the end. What can I say? I guess I'm easy.
We had chicken satay to start and for dinner I had the Thai Steak. Melinda had some Curry something-er-other Chicken. Both were very tasty. The chicken satay was juicy and tender and so was the steak. The curry sauce on the be-fri's chicken was really good.
Totally delicious and reasonably priced. What a treat!

This is the only restaurant I've given 5 STARS to so far...
When ever my friends want Thai food, this place is always my first suggestion. It is, by far, my favorite Thai restaurant in SD.
Amarin's food is consistantly delicious--everything is good. Their appetizer sampler platter is awesome. The deep fried wrapped shirmp is amazing, the chicken satay is so good and the peanut sauce is perfection. It also comes with egg rolls (which are just okay) and a glass noodle salad which is to die for!
My favorite dish on the menu is the mussaman curry with beef. The beef is so tender it's practically falling apart and the curry is the ideal mix of savory curry with sweet coconut milk. delish!!
I also love their pineapple fried rice and pad see ew with tofu.
Honestly, everything about this place: the lovely patio decor, reasonable prices, efficient service and hearty portion size, make it well worth the trip.
Try and see for yourself!

We searched on yelp to find a kid friendly Thai restaurant and was sold when we read Avery's comment below. We weren't let down! I now also want to make sweet love to the yellow curry, it was amazing. The spicy fried rice, tom kah soup, and mad fish were all excellent as well. I was nervous about taking my 8 months old, but it turned out to be fine. Oh, yellow curry with shrimp...we will meet again.

My favorite Thai in San Diego thus far.
Top four things you can't go wrong with here:
1) Tom Yum with chicken (get the pot, the bowl is teenie)
2) Som Tam, the papaya salad, they are quite generous with this and it's soo tasty.
3) Pad thai. If you feel like taking a risk, get the roasted duck, it really adds a great kick to it.
4) Mango with sticky rice...ahhh...I could eat that each day for the rest of my life.
Plus five stars for awesome service and bomb diggity food.
Minus one star for hard-to-find-parking and bug in water.
If you haven't been here, you should come here, that is all.

Five stars to Amarin Thai for giving me an out-of-this-world experience.
Seriously. This little jewel, tucked just off the main restaurant drag in Hillcrest, fed me and pampered my senses so well that when I finally emerged in my happy food stupor, I had to check my sense of direction and remind myself where we parked.
My dinner companions and I had a sizeable meal (one bowl + one pot soup, three entrees) for under $60. *Good* food.
First, I love the layout and decor... the walkway dining looked quite romantic. The dining rooms themselves were bright and cheerful, and I thought the utensil holders were an adorable touch. Wait staff was courteous and prompt, and in a display of amazing luck, we barely had to wait for a table. (Less lucky were the busload of tourists behind us, however.)
Nearly all of our dishes were excellent: The Tom Kah (+ Shrimp) satisfied some deep craving I didn't know I had until it touched my tongue. The Tom Yum (+ Tofu) was also well-prepared, fresh, and not overly spicy. (Sidenote: the waitress did not ask us for spice level specifications on any dish, so if you need a dish toned down, speak up yourself.) The Gaprow (+ Chicken) was perfectly cooked, all of the vegetable flavors held together beautifully, and again, the spice brought a welcome level of heat to the dish. We also had a yellow-curry duck with pineapple, grapes and tomato--my favorite dish of the night (with Gaprow a close 2nd). The only less stellar dish was the steaming Mahi Mahi with shiittake mushrooms--both the veggies and fish were overcooked.
The overall dining experience, for the price, definitely merits 5 stars in my book. Thanks Amarin Thai!

Being half-Thai I feel entitled to say I know good Thai food when I taste it. This place was good, but doesn't have me proclaiming, "this is the best Thai food I've ever had!" I ordered the pad grapow and my husband had the pineapple fried rice. His serving was huge and even came in a hollowed out pineapple.
The gra-pow was OK. I was expecting the traditional ground meat and instead got slices of chicken among the mixed vegetables. Flavor was OK, but what I liked most about our dining experience was the "Thai snacks" appetizer. You get a lazy susan with sliced limes, shrimp, peanuts, toasted coconut, diced red onion, and ginger. Put a little of each on a spinach leaf along with some of their special sauce and you're on your way to the best tasting Thai appetizer you'll ever eat!
The food was beautiful and the wait staff attentive. A good Thai fix when you need one.

Creamy, fragrant coconut milk danced with exotic Thai spices, tender potato chunks, and succulent shrimp -- all warmed by ripe onion slices and a spicy chili paste curry. This delicate concoction then made sweet, sweet love to a bed of perfectly steamed white rice lying vulnerably beneath it, cooled by a refreshing side of cucumber and a subtle hint of peanut.
Yes, Yellow Curry, I do believe I'm in love with you. In fact, when I've tried the yellow curry dishes at other Thai places around town, I felt like I was cheating on you. I'm so sorry for straying, lover. I thought of you the entire time I was eating another.
But I'll never stray again. Amarin Thai masters all the best parts of what a Thai dining experience should be. Always thoughtfully plated and always creative in its playful executions of ingredient fusions interesting enough to hold the attention of a foodie with A.D.D. like me, Amarin also manages to maintain its authenticity while still pleasing Thai neophytes.
In other words, there's something for everyone on the menu. And the shit TASTES GOOD. In many cases, like the Yellow Curry for instance, it's excellent.
The only drawback to this otherwise charming neighborhood hole-in-the-wall is that parking is a nasty, nasty little bitch.
Which, if parking is a big pet peeve for you, you'll have to do what I did and just move within a two-block radius of Amarin so you can walk over.
Now that might sound crazy to some, but right now, with the housing market and the economy in the shitter and all, there are some seriously good deals on one-bedroom cracker boxes in HIllcrest.
Just think about it (also keeping in mind those sucky gas prices).
Just the other night, as I was getting up to leave following a seductive meal in which I mixed together my pad thai noodles with the coconut broth of my Yellow Curry all incestuous-like on my plate, the adorable Thai gal at the host stand smiled at me. "You come back?"
Oh I come back. I come back again and again.

I want to go back here again! Just because I felt there's more to try.
My boyfriend and I came here because he lost a bet to me (long story), so he had to take me out. YAY! I wanted Thai food mmmm. I was thinking about going to Di-Chan, which isn't bad at all, but I realized I haven't tried Amarin!
So luckily we found parking on the street, then we were immediately seated by the window. My first concern? Flies. There were flies by the window and my bf had to kill at least 2 of them. Not cool. On to the food, we ordered some egg rolls to start, then I had beef drunken noodle and he had duck pad thai.
Egg rolls were delicious with the plum sauce! Without a doubt. Duck pad thai? I'm not a fan of duck period, but he is. He liked it for a while, till it got too, well, ducky. And the drunken noodle? BOMB. That was yummmmy. I savored my leftovers the day after. As for service, it was pretty good. Our waters were always filled and the waiter was really friendly.
Like I said, I NEED to come here again! I saw so many yummy dishes on other tables, that it is totally necessary to go back, ASAP!
I love this place. Good authentic food for good price. You can get a vegetarian lunch for $4.95! That's cheaper than McDonald's. I love this place for Hillcrest. Suck up with the crap parking but def go!

Go with the wisdom of the Yelp! crowd here, folks.
Darn near perfect on all counts.
I had no idea duck and shiitake mushrooms (different dishes) could be sent to such great heights!
I'm a regular at Amarin and I was never disappointed with anything. Mad Fish, Broken Hearts Club, Duck Curry are my favorites and everything is very tasty. It's always a pleasant experience.
I will be back again...
The Tom Kha soup or however you spell it here is awesome. I've tried to make it myself and can't even get close.
Friendly waiter service, and the food was delicious. Looking forward to going here again.

If I were only reviewing food... we would need a 10 point scale! So ridiculously yummy!!!! I went to Thailand a year ago and have dreamed of finding a place that could take me back there... atleast through the food experience! Until Now!
The location is a bit different so I was a bit skeptical but I am hooked. I have been here more than a handful of times now and will continue to come back time and time again.
The only reason I didn't not give 5 stars is because the service is really dragging. Like I mentioned I have been here numerous times and its always the same. At first it really bothered me but now I know what to expect so I don't let it get to me, but it really is a shame that a restaurant with such amazing food is brought down a notch because the service is rather unattentive. Take it as a hint when a guest has to get up and goto the desk to ask for or pay for the check!

Egads. I had the Choo-Chi duck, yuck. Of course, started with the fresh spring rolls, had sprouts in them that tasted like earth. We were seated next to the shiter, which is just lame. They shouldn't have tables so close to the bathrooms. We had the mango with sticky rice for desert, and they effed that up too. They sprinkled some type of nuts onto the sticky rice, but when they microwaved it (I assume here) the nuts were turned to stone. It was like chewing little rocks. Mmmm . . . rocky Thai goodness. I will never return. There are so many good Thai places in the Dago, this place blows.
This is my favorite Thai place in San Diego. We all know that SD is swarming with Thai restaurants, and while I haven't tried them all, I have tried upwards of 15 and this one is the best.
Prices are nice and cheap on the basics (pad thai or curry with a basic protein is $7-9 and enough for two meals). The lunch special is fabulous. It can get pricey if you start going for the specialty items, and add apps and dessert, but everything there is SO good.
Some of my favorite menu items:
Pad Thai with chicken
Panang Curry with either chicken or duck
Tom Kah soup (must get this every time, it's awesome)
Mambo Mambo Chicken (red curry with Mangoes. mmmm)
Choo Chi Salmon.
Golden Triangles (curried potatoes in crispy fried wrappers)
The BF loves their BBQ half chicken and Yellow Curry with pork.
They have a huge wine selection if that's your thing. I'm more of a Thai Beer girl, and I can get that on there as well. I recommend reservations for a party of more than 4, or on a Friday or Saturday night. Parking sucks, but that's not really their fault. It is Hillcrest after all. We usually have decent luck finding something heading east on Robinson.

Wow, well reviewed. Secret, I've never actually sat down and eaten here. BUT, I have a cool job that often gets me freebies and scored some tickets to Taste of Hillcrest last year. This was THE ONLY place we went to during the whole shindig that we wanted to go back to and actually eat at. Which says a lot, b/c better believe we stuffed our fat faces at every single stop, not missing one.....and they included places like the beloved Mama Testa and The Tractor Room....nothing impressed us but Amarin. So, for Taste of Hillcrest, Amarin Thai, I give 5 out of 5 stars!

The other night I was craving Thai food and so I decided to give Amarin a try (again). I've had lunch there before but I've never had dinner. I decided to place an order for Pad Kee Mao aka Drunken noodles w/beef (with the spicyness of "8") for take out.
Before I delve into how I devoured the drunken noodles, I'd first like to discuss my only real qualm with this place. PARKING. My god. I am suprised that my food wasn't cold and that the ice in my thai iced tea didn't melt. I circled that entire neighborhood at least 6 times. Is there some secret parking lot that I am unaware of? There was a point where I even contemplated double parking since all I had to do was run my ass in there to get my food (of course, I would also pay). Anyway, so I managed to squeeze into this tiny ass spot with my rear-end "hella" in the way and not where it was supposed to be (lol). Thank goodness it took me only a couple of mins to get my food.
Despite that little hiccup, the food was good and i devoured it in less time than it took me to find a parking spot.

100+ reviews can't be wrong -- Amarin Thai is the clear winner in my ongoing attempt to find really good Thai food in SD. On their ridiculously extensive menu, you'll find dishes that you've never tried before (either because they're too regional for mainstream inclusion, or because they're some fancy Asian fusion creation, who knows). And they're all delicious -- the only way you can go wrong here is if you choose a spice level a little beyond your tolerance.
After trying Golden Triangles for a starter, I am addicted -- these are crispy friend wontons filled with curried potatoes and served with a sweet plum dipping sauce. (Check out my photo to see the generous portion size.) You should also save room for a bowl of hot soup -- try Potak with tofu, which is apparently a regional dish flavored with lemongrass and ginger. It's fantastic, I'd venture to say even more flavorful and fulfilling than the good standby Tom Kha with coconut milk, mushrooms, and lime.
As for the entrees, I highly recommend Rama, when served with crispy tofu and steamed broccoli, and covered with peanut sauce (check out my photo). Yet another fulfilling dish where you can get your peanut fix and still enjoy healthy vegetables. I've enjoyed other entrees, too -- Yellow Curry and Gaprow stand out, and there are still so many more I have to head back for!
Though this review should really be a 4.5 (service can be off at times, I've received the wrong order and had to remind the waiter to bring the wine), I'm rounding up because this place is worth the wait, they allow you to linger over your bottle of wine even on busy weekends, the decor is adorable, with each room having a different ambiance, and there are some good wine specials. I will find any excuse to have dinner here and wish I'd checked it out sooner!
This is probably my favorite Thai place in San Diego - I lament the fact that it's in Hillcrest and kinda out of my way, but I love their cozy feel and their innovative cuisine.
I am absolutely in love with their Ramba (sp?) Shrimp, which is on their "special" menu. Generously portioned, beutifully presented and most importantly - absolutely delicious, this dish is simply a little piece of heaven covered in green sauce and set on a plate.
I've heard the service could be a bit of a hit or miss, but I've always had great attentive servers and my glass has never been empty... so until I experience otherwise, I'd say this is most definite a 5 star establishment.

It was very spicy... even at that. (It leaves me wondering what the heck an 8-10 would Be! Whew!!!)

It has excellent food at reasonable prices in an elegant atmosphere that is also kid friendly. Quietly tucked away from the bustling livelihood of University Ave., Amarin provides a laid-back and earthy environment for frequent diners. The service is spectacular. Upon entrance, we were immediately seated and provided beverages. Waitresses were polite and pleasant to be around with. Their menu is quite "well-equipped"; I highly recommend trying one of their specials. I had requested "PP Islands", which turned out to be a melody of seafood immersed in a thick sea of coconut-flavored curry. I found the taste to be agreeable--creamy, smooth, and flavorful with a hint of bay leaves. The portions are generous and inviting. Price range is somewhat moderate for dinner. The elegant and relaxed atmosphere draws in a diverse crowd and caters to all types of special occasions. In my opinion, this is one of the best Thai places I have ever come across.

Okay, this will always and forever be one of my favorite Thai places. I came here before we even moved to San Diego, when we were here simply for a visit, and we came back after we finished unloading our Uhaul!!! It's good, completely unpretentious, with really good service, and a cozy setting. My favorite is the fried rice stuffed in a pineapple with all kinds of yummy shrimp and chicken and pork all mixed in. I love their curry, really do, but that darn pineapple gets me every time!! Usually, I can scrounge some curry off the BF's share of our dinner, so I get that covered as well. Thai iced tea added in and I am ready to go!! Addiction complete.

Amarin Thai is a nice little cozy Thai restaurant that is unlike I've ever been to. Their menu can be a bit overwhelming with all the choices, but imagine a Thai restaurant menu with traditional thai entrees, seafood, noodles, fried rice plates, specialties, and special Amarin Thai favorites on a separate sheet inside the main menu.
I went with Rick P.'s suggestion to get the mombo chicken (also the photo featured on their homepage), as well as 2 of my companions. And all I can say is "Mombo, Mombo, Mombo." Mombo must mean "excellent" in Thai because it was great. Mangos, red curry, chicken, and served in a golden pot!!!!
Great presentation from the food to the utensils, and the lady playing the stringed musical instrument during dinnertime was a worthwhile treat. I didn't even realize it was a live person playing music until my friend pointed it out. Favorite Thai restaurant south of La Jolla!!!

After reading all the great reviews on here by my peers I just had to check it out so, luckily for me, my friend wanted to buy me lunch there.
The ambiance is great, a lovely semi covered courtyardy type dining area, excellent staff, large fresh portions - in fact I only have one complaint and thats one that shouldn't affect the rest of you.
It wasn't spicy enough.
It was tasty enough, lovely enough but if I am asked what spice out of ten would I like and I ask for a ten, I want pain!!!
However, this is just me (and if you've read my past reviews you'll know its a common occurrence for Taansend). Do go there. you'll love it.
By the way, did I mention that its tremendous value for money too.

I was inspired to try this place because of all the reviews. I was very pleased and so was my husband. After the RUNnoosh fiasco, I was sure he would be reluctant to try new restaurants for a while. But, he seems to trust Yelpers, so we gave it a shot.
We were greeted warmly. We were seated right away. We ordered the spicy noodles with tofu and the panang curry (which they actually made vegan for us without fish sauce!) with mock duck. The curry was way flavorful. The spicy noodles had a slight sweetness to it, which I wasn't too thrilled with, but it was still quite tasty. I can't wait to try the drunken noodles and pad thai here. The prices were decent for the quality and the portions. The service was on point. Overall, a pleasant dining experience. Ahh. Now, that's refreshing. Like that first sip of ice cold beer. We'll be going back.

I love Thai. Where the women can sometimes have a surprise inside or is that Hong Kong? Either way I love Asians.
It is a sunny Sunday in Hillcrest. I replaced my previous three meals with alcohol (Dinner, Breakfast, and Lunch) and I am rather hungry. Luckily I was located two blocks away from Amarin Thai. Which happens to be conveniently right next to the Alibi which is conveniently right next to Servall. Which means sooner or later I need to move to this neighbor hood and quit being gangsta and overall shady in Spring Valley.
We had a menu lying around and I phoned in the order. I had some Spring Rolls and Chicken Lo Mein at a modest level 5. It was delicous. Upon picking up my order I saw how clean cut this place is. It has ample out and indoor seating and the staff was nice. So if you like Thai food, Asians, or Tranny's Amarin or Hillcrest in general will tickle your pickle (fancy).
