Heck yes!
The books are already cheap and then take off another 20% for the Labor Day weekend sale. I feel like I'm robbing them!
This time I found another Rachel Ray cookbook, a Korean cookbook, and a German dictionary.
I think I can finally figure out what dirty things these chicks are saying to each other in the German Scheisse videos.

I am updating this to 5 stars for the simple fact that I failed to realize on the first trip that they have the most fabulous selection of old vinyl records. I am planning to hang some albums up on my wall (to go with the Journey ones already hanging...that's right!) and managed to walk out of there with albums by the Scorpions, Billy Squier, and Billy Idol. I will likely go back all the time to complete my 80s throwback album collection....cooooolio. And I won't call someone on my cell and flip through every album while screaming the artists' name into the phone for the person to hear like that one lady was doing...I promise.

I feel dirty. Well...dirtier after being here. And not "dirty" like physically dirty and not "dirty" like Cinemax after 1AM dirty either. Think it was the musty aroma that bellowed through the stacks and uneven rows of tattered pieces of paper that were once referred to as books.
And I've been here a few times in may past life as a student at UTD when I needed stuff from this warehouse of long forgotten literatzi. My latest visit came courtesy of my friend looking for a screenwriting book. Thanks, friend.
Anyhoo, we walked inside after a few grudge matches with other cars for the same parking spot and I got the "eek" vibe within moments. As he flew off into the great beyond, I found myself surrounded by - now don't get all pissy - people who looked way too into the comic books and wizard shit they were reading. That's just not me, hence my apprehension. I'm dealing.
So after moving beyond that, I glanced into the dusty, antiqued display cases where they housed such whimsies as "The Catcher in the Rye" paperback (maybe vintage?) and some other books I - with my UTD Lit degree - have never heard of. Doesn't mean they're no good, just that no one thought I'd care to know about them I guess. You tell me.
So I shove along and check out the random stacks of books hither and tither. They all feel dirty. Give me a towel. It's just the whole place was freaking me out. And my bud's cell phone went dead and I felt like the lost kid in Albertson's when his mom skips off to the meat department to "talk" to the new butcher. Translation: alone on a desert isle.
Now I don't make tons of money and I don't care if I get the latest hardback copy of Harry Potter and his witch friends - I just got the "creeper" vibe here and wanted to roll the eff on.
Oh, and they got a coffee joint - I don't drink the stuff - but I hear it's decent enough. Again, coffee equals "blah" to me.
See ya...at Barnes & Noble!

j'adore hpb! i kinda like that stale air smell you get from being in the stacks. just be careful if you have dust allergies cause then you are DOOMED.
only downside is that the aisles tend to be crowded with noisy folk who like to scream into their respective cellphones obliterating anyone within hearing distance of their once fine hearing. UGH. put yer cellys on vibe, yo?!?! wth?!
oh oh oh, and lets not forget that this weekend you get an additional 20% off! omg. how freakin awesome is that? its damn near free.
This is actually a reason to live in Dallas. This is their flagship store and about 20 times the size of any other store they have. It's easily bigger than a large Barnes/Noble and is just filled with books from every category, all at amazing prices. It's a rare HPB that has a coffee shop in it too!
If you get to Dallas and like books, get there.

Truly a book lovers paradise! They have a ton of books on a ton of subjects ranging from new to used. The prices are very competitive & they have a great clearance section! They buy back books so if they get a ton of one book in particular they mark it down to a dollar or so. This works out because a lot of the popular books that everyone runs out and buys are here pretty cheap later on. I was very impressed with the Womens Studies, GLBT, and sexology section they were very comprehensive. They also have records, movies, magazines and a lovely cafe I didn't get a chance to check out.
I would love to give this place 5 stars...I really world! However I came looking for a new release and they didn't have it! I asked the lady to help and they don't have inventory on the computer so you you're just on your own. She gave me a few pointers on where it "might" be, I never found it. If you're looking for something specific you might have to hit up borders but if you're on the market to find a few good books this is the place for you.

I've not been in here since...well, it's been almost a year. I was looking for books on historic Dallas. Honestly, I would have gone to the library but I forgot to return some video tapes and long story short, it was gonna cost less to buy the books at Half Price.
While looking for what I needed, I ran into several books I just wanted. They were photo books on Texas, kinda quirky artsy ones. They were on the cheap and in great condition, so I got them.
Low and behold when I was in all the galleries in South West Texas...there were my cheap in great condition books...but not so cheap. Those books were selling for around $20 - $50 EACH. What a steal on my part.
This is the reason we all LOVE Half Price Books!

once i walked out of this place with copies of moby dick, fast food nation, steppenwolf, and you cant go home again. i paid under $3.
with that said, i hate spending more than the minimum amount of time possible here. shop and get the hell out before you realize that the whole god forsaken place is held together with ply wood and rusty nails.
never walk in looking for a specific book. you wont find it. if you find something you want to read, you should probably go ahead and grab it. once i went in and saw a half dozen copies of naked lunch. i thought, awesome but i came for american gods, so ill get that and get naked lunch next week. came back 3 days later, zero copies of naked lunch. zero.

I had fought going here for the longest time. I just figured it had to be overrated with the commercials and the fanfare. I was wrong.
I went to browse through their store...I walked out with 5 books and spent under 30 bucks. Some of these books retailed for 20-30 bucks new! They were pretty much new anyways. I loved that I could get books I've craved for so long that cheap. If I had more money I would have walked out with my own library. I even found book there that I bought for a college course...it cost me over 70 bucks...Half Price had it for 15!
They are so extensive and so reasonably priced, you must light cigars with 100 dollar bills if you don't get your books from here.

Some 5-star comments that are less common: The service is wonderful. I flagged a lady down about a book that cost far more than it should have cost, and she marked it down on the spot. Best vinyl selection out of any HPB I've been to, hands down. Prices are fair to good. Includes lots of 78s (!). Good coffee!
The only real downside is the lack of any sort of store catalog. But c'mon people.. it's a used bookstore.

Yesterday was our first trip to this place and we loved it. It's a bit overwhelming at first. It's huge, what to check out first? The prices are most excellent. The selection was OK, obviously it changes daily. I bought a couple earlier edition books for less than $5 and some CDs. I also bought some albums to frame. I have no clue about selling here, but as cheap as they sell things they can't pay that much. We'll be hitting it regularly as we grocery shop in the area.

I've come here since I was a small child, and it was across the street at the old location. This place is more awesome than sliced bread. I love to just browse their HUGE clearance section and grab cheapie titles that catch my eye. I really have no complaints about Half Priced Books, at least this location. I think most of the other locations kind of suck in comparison since they often do not have what I am looking for. But the big Half Priced always has what I need!

A 2.5 star review would be appropriate, as the average between 5 and 0.
For selection, I believe this is one of the finest bookstores in the country. It's a book lover's toyland.
If you're selling these guys books, though, your rectum will be sore for days. You'll get an offer that is not only scandalously low, but really quite insulting. Indeed, the way I've been treated as a seller has caused me to nearly swear off this chain as a buyer.

They have a decent selection in the business section ( the area I usually browse for school purposes) wish there was a bit more though. I love their prices awesome for students on a budget.
I love this place. I print out my Amazon wish list and take it with me to see what I might be able to pick up. There are always newer books available. I tend to spend $50 each time- but I come home with a bag full of books - versus 3 books from Borders.
I do still need a Borders trip every now and then though - there is something about the new book smell in those stores...

I don't remember when Half Price opened, but I feel like I have spent my entire adult life there, and most of my hard earned money. I like to read, and listen to music, and play on my PC. I don't go anywhere else but half price for stuff to do this with. At one time I had amassed a collection of over three thousand books all from Half Price. I go there with my six year old every chance I get. We want to move so we can be nearer the Northwest Highway store, so we can stay longer! If you want it, they probably have it. Check out there website which has a locator on it as well. I moved to Atlanta for a couple of years, and no used book store has the same advantage of Half price. They drive the right behavior, by not trying to gouge you on any item in the store. The prices are fair, and you get a great deal on New and Used stuff.
some little known facts are:
They have great Bibles
there is a massage therapist in-store
There is an ad board where you can find local deals
They have a discount card for teachers and home-school families
They have a warehouse out near 35 and 635 for teachers only.
The kids section is a great place for a play-date
IF you think something should be cheaper, say so!

I'm a book whore, and Half-Price Books completely satisfies my habit of buying more books than I can read in a lifetime.
My favorite area is the clearance section located toward the back of the store. There you can find a lot of good books for no more than $3 each.
Also, the store's community room plays host to several interesting groups and programs monthly.
Finally, don't forget to check out the record wall that features framed album covers from every musical genre. It's a mini record album museum.

Despite the fact that I prefer smaller, more intimate, independently owned used book stores, I have to admit that the big Half Price Books on Northwest Highway has always amazed me. The only issue I have with the place is that the selection often feels impersonal. They will put tons of crap books amongst the usual gems one can find at a Half Price Books. Still, I have spent entire days here browsing through books. It's like the Super Walmart of used book stores. If you are stuck in Dallas and love books, definitely check this place out.

This place is great! Great selection of books and easy to get lost.
They have a nice cafe with some tables to hang out as well.
If your looking for certain popular books or movies (especally VHS), stop by the CLEARANCE section. We bought a bunch of foreign movies for $1. Yes... $1.
Cheaper than renting at blockbusters!
Also, join the freq flyer program. They have general sales from time to time.

It's like Christmas every day in here for a book lover. Row upon row upon row of books. It's one of my favorite places to go on dates (the upteenth date, not the 1st. I'm not THAT nerdy). This is not the tiny cluttered used bookstore with floor to ceiling dusty bookshelves and a proprietor behind a giant desk with white hair and a big cat (I've been to one like that, seriously). But then, this is Dallas, not England, so if you give up that romantic Dickensian dream, then Half-Price is the perfect Dallas used bookstore.
This is the land of chain stores, and Half-Price looks exactly like a Borders or Barnes and Nobles, except with everything used. They have a coffee shop, a reading area in the back, an antiques section, used records and cds and movies, and of course endless books. And they buy your books (haven't tried that yet). I was sucked in and found 7 books for $38 bucks.
Yay. My library is happy.

A type of hell for people with A.D.D. - so many books calling your name. Set aside plenty of time to browse their extensive selection and you'll find all kinds of things you can't live without. My most recent purchase was a second printing of Julia Child's "The Art of French Cooking" with cool notes in the margins by some former gourmet in training - completely fascinating. A great place to buy CDs/DVDs also - especially kids stuff.

This is the best book store ever. I love this place because when I was in college the books were outragous, as long as you don't mind digging it will be totally worth it and you will save so much money on textbooks.
This is the best bookstore ever!!! It has a HUGE selection of books, CDs, and records. I stick mostly to fiction, and I can find lots of great things marked down to $1 almost every time I go. The employees are very knowledgeable--not only helping you find what you need but also making recommendations for other works you might enjoy. You can't always find the bestsellers, but if you check in regularly (which is fun to do anyway) you'll eventually find what you're looking for, as well as a lot more! They don't pay you much for your books, but that's my only complaint.
Want $5 off? Go to: http://www.halfpricebo...
While you're here, check out Black Forest Coffee. From 9am-10pm, they serve some tasty sandwiches, delicious pastries, decent drip coffee, and pretty good espresso drinks.
Unrelated to their official services--if you're moving, Half Price Books is a good place to get boxes. Go in the back door and ask nicely and they let you take whatever boxes they have available. They might even help you to your car if you give them a nice smile. :)

There may be many things wrong with this bookstore, but I can't think of any. There might be better bookstores some where out there in the weird wide world, but none come to mind. This is my bookstore. I am there several times a week. Naturally, I have my favorite corners in the store, but there isn't a category that I have left unchecked, or a flavor of coffee that is unfamiliar to these frightfully curious taste buds of mine. Their poetry section is rare; their fiction literature is varied; and their philosophy shelves are enough to turn even the greatest of egos into a virtuous citizen of the world. The employees at this Half-Price location are intelligent, knowledgeable and honest enough to distinguish between the two. If they don't know something, they will direct you to someone who does. Give these people your hard-earned money - they deserve it. Of course, they will provide you with a thing for more valuable than money, though both are printed on paper. Guys, what would we do without trees? The answer: the tattoo business would likely be a function of the government. Strange thought.

My friends and I always make it a point to look for treasures here, we always seem to come way with an item or two. Half the fun is the search, as you never know what gem you will discover that you never knew existed. This location also has a fairly decent comic section; you can find me browsing their dvds, religion books and entertainment sections This is the biggest location of the ones in the metroplex; since it houses their warehouse.
Also love the fact that they close at 11pm, so make sure you have time to spare in your search.

For anyone who loves to spend an excessive amount of money on reading material, this place is a lifesaver.
When a friend first told me about Half Price Books, I thought it sounded great, but doubted it could live up to the rave reviews. I was wrong. This place has more stock than any bookstore I've ever seen.
Basically, it's a giant warehouse filled to the brim with cheap books, CDs, records and other gift items, as well as a coffee shop. Every time I go I find some great new book I've never heard of before ... and they're always cheap enough to take home!
Definitely a great place to go if you're bored or looking for something new to read. It's easy to spend hours in this place, so look out! The only slight downfall is that you might be out of luck if you're looking for a specific book. You can't always find what you're looking for ... but you can always find something good!

I'm going to be biased here because these guys used to pay me and maybe they still do (is that okay to admit?) but it really doesn't matter because I would take up residence in any location and sleep at night with my head on a stack of O Magazines. I don't know. It just sounds nice.
Anyway, if you like books, this is your place. If you hate books then there are other things for you. Software, CDs, records, gifty things, and interesting and comely employees. And some that might be borderline insane. That is okay, though, because they know their stuff.
I personally find the Northwest Hwy location really intimidating, though, because of its grandiose-ness, so if you, too, are easily overwhelmed then visit one of the many other fine locations that are smaller but equally stocked with interesting and comely employees..

A large, inespensive book store! I always find deals at this place and love to go there! Also, it is open quite late, so I like to go after class lets out. Other second hand book stores often do not have what I am looking for, but this Half Price books usually delivers! They also have a great childrens section, cook book section and plenty of other sections that I am not thinking of at the moment. It is also great to go there to look for books related to school, I have found many good resources for papers and school projects! When your little one has a class reading list, definitely check this place out!
Genuis. It's like buying books on Ebay without the wait . . . If you're looking to buy a book, as long as it's not a brand new best seller (and hell, sometimes THOSE even make it there!) go to Half-Price Books. Go to THIS Half Price Books. It's probably waiting for you.
A couple tips . . . when you're looking for books, look at all of the copies. You can often find a diffferent prices on the same book.
As far as the parking thing goes . . . park in the back. There's a back entrance and no one ever parks there.
Take your time . . . plan on being there a while. If you're a bookie, you'll end up there for hours and won't even realize it.
Also, it's not the greatest place to sell your books, if you're looking for value. Think about it . . . it's Half Price Books . . . the MOST you'll get for your books is a quarter of the price, and that's only if they think they can sell it immediately.
(I went in the other day with the 6th Harry Potter on CD, which I bought for $70. They told me they'd sell it for $30, and they offered me $15. I decided to just keep it and sell it on Ebay or something . . . unless you want to buy it . . .)
Great prices, great suff. What more can you say? They don't always have the exact thing I'm looking for, but I end up leaving with something better anyway everytime I go. Even though they don't pay a lot for books I sell, it's nice to know they take everything and try to donate and recycle what doesn't sell. A good company all the way around.

I LOVE BOOKS! I miss the old neighborhood bookstores where you knew the owner and they knew exactly what they did or did not have and could suggest books and authors for you. Since there are so few of those around anymore, Half-Price books is one of my frequent stops. This location on Northwest Hwy is the biggest and best. You can find almost anything here: new releases, old books, computer software, music and something on almost any topic. It is so big you could spend hours just browsing through one subject.
Some negatives - they have so much stuff, there are even boxes on the floors filled with books....what am I missing? So I spend even more time going through those boxes. The other thing is that they don't give you much for your books at all. I took in over 70 books - health, travel, ficition, non-fiction very few were over 3 or 4 years old. When they called me for my price quote it was like $17.50! When I took them all back except the 7 travel books, they gave me $16 for them. So....Half Price book is fine for buying, but terrible for selling your books.
Here's how nerdy I am: sometimes, I like nothing better on a Friday night than to get coffee with my boyfriend and spend a few hours in Half Price Books. You can find some gems if you have the patience to search through all of their records. We've found a ton of really fantastic, random, blast-from-the-past 7 inches for our jukebox. And the books. The books! This place is a fantasy land if you love books as much as I do.
And if you've been to another Half Price Books location in the city and not this one, you have no idea what you're missing.
Whenever I come to Dallas I come here and come away with more boks than I can take home. There are lots of branches around Texas but this is the biggest and best.
Oh my god I want to go here so badly! I always thought this was the coolest place in all of Dallas. It is Disneyworld to me. So many cheap books! Lots of music and you can get coffee or tea. I wish this was in Chicago.

"Best place to be seen frontin your literacy", would be the category for this place in Dallas Observers yearly "Best of"series. Now lest you be unawares, Half Price books locations in general are pretty kickass; but this is the billy-badass-super-Mecca of Half-Price books. Its the ikea of half price books, minus the labyrinth of cheap stylish home furnishings.
Usually i stumble upon a half price books, on a whim, hidden in some non-descript strip mall, between a dry cleaner and a karate school. I never know what the hell im looking for, or where to look. And thats part of the charm; its more like scavenger hunting than shopping. You may not come away with much, but at least it'll be cheap.
But this location is chock full of great finds. In here is all kinds of books, magazines, records, movies and nerds like me. They even have some hard to find collectibles for sale, wisely tucked away from your greasy mitts behind display cases. I mean they had an actual copy of The Beadles Yesterday And Today vinyl with the infamous Butcher cover; i mean how kickass is that?!?! Anybody have about seven-hundy i could borrow?
They also have a BarnesAndNobles-like info counter where you can have them look up the name of that book you heard about, written by that lady, about some subject you vaguely remember, that you'd like to pretend to be interested in. And also a children's section, where you can dump your kids while you score some Black Forest coffee.
This is a Half Price books you could actually find what you're looking for, whether you know what that is or not, when you walk in the door. Hell you could even walk away broke from this place, but at least you'll have scored some quality swag to impress your like-minded literaphiles...all three of them.
