They are now charging a $1.00 fee to use cards, regardless of your total bill. What the balls??????

Just have a minimum for card purchases or something. I won't dock any stars because I'm rad and loyal. I'm still down with Roberto's, but they should really get rid of this silly rule especially if you order more than $10 in food.

I was excited to go to San Diego and eat some Mexican food... my friend had suggested this Roberto's because he used to live in San Diego and this was his favorite... it was just okay to me... maybe they were having a bad day but the Carne Asada was really over cooked and dry.  It was about 2pm and we were intoxicated since 10am (hey, we were on vacation) and we totally devoured 2 carne asada fries and a chimichanga and a shrimp plate.... but even though we were intoxicated it wasn't the best meal ever... that says something. haha.  The food was okay but not the best.

This was the first taco shop experience I had when I moved down to San Diego. At the time it would have been a 5 star, but I've sinced moved on and tried a whole mess of taco shops and find this one to be not so good.

It was good for a study break in college since it was 24 hour. The funny part is at this location there is a stripper place next door. So sometimes me and my friends eating there would always wonder if the men eating there are having a break from the ladies...maybe.

It does taste better if your a bit intoxicated! Then I would give it 3 stars!

Peace out.

My BF and I eat here at least once a day every time we come down to SD. He introduced it to me when we first got together about 3 years ago, and it never fails to satisfy us!!!

Their rolled tacos are amazing.. perfectly crispy and crunchy, warm seasoned chewy meat, with fresh guacamole and tons of sour cream. Oh and don't forget the mexican cheese! I think that's the best part...oh and the price. At Roberto's, we spend about $12 tops and we are always full.

Anyway besides that my BF loveeees carne asada fries, the CA burrito (with fries in it mmm), their breakfast burritos, nachos, and chimichangas. Okay maybe he just loves everything, but whenever we go we can't just get one item. Oh and the hot sauce doesn't compare to any other mexican take-out place. We even tried to make rolled tacos at home in SLO but it didn't even come close.. that's how much we missed it.

The workers are cool too. They've messed up a couple of our orders before like forgetting to add guacamole or sour cream, or things like that.. but every time they always fix it, sometimes free of charge!

What's better than one order of pollo asada fries?  Two orders of pollo asada fries for the price of one!  That's the secret, just order one and tell them you want it split into two boxes, and voila, you get two orders!

This is the third Roberto's location I've been to.  I'm not even sure if they're related, in fact, on the outside they call this one Rigaberto's.  Whatever.  It's freakin good.  We ordered pollo asada fries dripping in its own sauce and slathered in guacamole and cheese over a bed of crunch fries.  Hot damn!  Plus we split a California burrito, carne asada and fries wrapped in a flaky tortilla.  Heart attack to go.

As an out of towner, I realize that my palate is pretty far removed from good Mexican food.  I'm glad I have Roberto's to look forward to whenever I'm in town.

I dont like Robertos substandard mexican food. Dont waste your money here. Unless you are drunk or have never been to real taco shop like Palomino's or Lolita's.

Another favorite for drunk UCSD students at 2 AM.  Otherwise, it's pretty much your standard, Mexican fast food place.

Their burritos are ok, but their carne asada is definitely of a lesser quality than you'd get at a place like Lolita's in Kearny Mesa.  On that note, this place is open 24/7, so major props for that.

The shop itself is pretty clean and there's enough seats.  Overall though it's a pretty uninspiring environment, but that's to be expected.  They don't have a drive-thru, and the parking spots are pretty tight.  However, at 2 AM it doesn't really make much of a difference.

I knocked them down from 3 stars to 2 though due to their newly implemented policy (as of 7/1/08) of charging 50 cents for using your debit or credit card.  I always knock a star off for minimum charge requirements or surcharges (which by the way are against Visa and Mastercard's policies).

I'd only recommend this place for late night, beer munchy food if it's the closest thing to you.  On that note, I usually travel the extra 1/4 of a mile and go to Rigoberto's instead.

This is the place that got me hooked on Carne Asada burritos.

I hate you Roberto's, and so does my waistline.

It's true, there is another one a couple blocks down.  They aren't bad either.  However, I have a strange connection to this place.  The burrito was always just AWESOME.

Salsa bottle was good.  But that burrito.  mmmmm.  So good.  So, so good.

Haven't eaten anything else here.  Only the burrito.  But I've had it at least a hundred times.

Good late night eats here. I had some friends that went to UCSD so whenever I visited them, this was the place they took me here. It's just like adalaberto's or alberto's or molsa chica.

3 of my staple orders here are:
1. Carne asada burrito - burrito with strips of steak and loaded with guacamole.
2. Carne asada fries - same steak & guac on french fries with cheese
3. 3 roll taquito with guacamole.

How can you go wrong with anything that has a lot of meat and covered in guacamole?  This place is the bomb. Especially after you eat the carne asada fries, you'll feel like a bomb hit your stomach.  If you want to get filled up and you're on a budget. This is the place to go.

The only 3 words you need to know when you come to this place: CARNE ASADA FRIES (CAF).

My whole "real" Mexican food experience (which up to this point, consisted of eating Taco Bell and El Super Burrito of Millbrae all my life), and notably CAF palate, was totally de-flowered here during my freshman year at UCSD.  The CAF here (popularly known as Roberto's #1) are soooo much better than Roberto's #2.  I know many people argue about this, but I'm standing strong on this one.  The fries portion may be a lot smaller, but at least the meat is flavorful and not sinewy.  I smother my fries with Robert's hot sauce.  They don't ask me "would you like hot sauce with your CAF?"...it's more like "would you like CAF with your hot sauce?"  Whoever thought of this concoction of fries, guacamole, carne asada, cheese, and hot sauce, is a genius!!

I never really got a chance to taste test other San Diego taquerias that served CAF, but this place is darn good to me!  Why can't Bay Area taquerias do the same?  It's so easy to do, and would be a huge moneymaker.  I think about CAF all the time...

There's an ongoing debate about with Roberto's is better...this location or the one a couple blocks down.

While I was going to UCSD we always went to this location...maybe because it was closer, maybe because we didn't know there was another one to try a little ways down, I don't know.  But I never had any problems here.

Later on I discovered the Roberto's down the way.  We called it the one with the stripper club next door...but now its a Spa store I think.  From what I've seen the carne asada fries portion may be a little larger there...I don't know for sure.

Either way, this one, that one, I like 'em both!

so I'm from LA and a UCSD alumn and everytime I roll down to SD, I do a straight b-line to robbys!  I don't care if the workers there are all covered in acne from the greasy-greasies, this place is good! drunk or sober.. yea that's right, I actually go there sober and the food is still delish.  I usually order 2 things on the menu, fish burrito and carna asada fries with extra guac.. mmmmm at first, i didn't like their so called "watered-down" hot sauce, but now I love that stuff. just be careful that you don't over do it.  my spice eater friend kept loading his chorizo burrito with it and half way through his meal, the bottom half of his burrito exploded!  disgusting but hilarious.  all ucsd peeps know how good this place is.  glad it is still around!

Definitely better than the one further down the road.  This is THE ultimate UCSD student place to go at night when everything is closed.  Its been a few years since I graduated from UCSD, but I occasionally I get the urge after a late night out in PB or downtown to hit this place up for the best carne asada fries you've ever had.  The thing is huge and usually too much to finish but when its late, it hits the spot.  Don't even think of going to Cotixan when you can go to Roberto's

Carne asada fries were ok....fries were underdone and there was no sourcream.   I've had better but since I was visiting San Diego on the first night here this had to do.  Oh well next one at some other place should be better. CA burrito was good.  Place was clean.

Meeeehhhh... This Roberto's location didn't really do it for me.  Now I really love Roberto's and have been going there for about 20 years now.  They totally rock!

Still, we just got a bunch of food at this location last weekend and here's my critique:

*  The rolled tacos with guacomole:  Although the guacomole totally rocks, the rolled tacos were way too overdone.  Crunchy good, but this was basically an exercise in dentistry... You know Jawbreakers, right?  Well this was the savory equivalent to the Jawbreaker...

* The cheese quesadilla *might* be good if you eat it then and there on the spot.  However, we had to drive all the food out to La Jolla and ate 20 minutes later... Yeah, at that point the quesadilla pretty much was hard with coagulated cheese.

* We had a bunch of wet burritos and those looked pretty good and the consensus was that it was quite tasty!  Too bad, then, that I didn't partake in them.

I'm gonna have to dock 'em a couple of stars, because this is a far cry from the quality of Roberto's that I have loved and known.

I have been to the other location a while ago and liked it.  It was a good 4th meal place during some late nights.  I went to this location because I work right by it.  Needless to say I wasn't very happy with what I got.  The burritos were ok, not as amazing as I remembered before.  The size was decent but nothing that really hit the spot.  The taste I would probably say was par to subpar compared with other places.   The ultimate test was the Carne Asada fries.  It is always the first thing I get to size up a mexican food joint.  Trying to remember how bad it was is kind of difficult.  After eating it I worked really hard to forget the experience.  I felt kind of bad hating it that much that I went back to try a burrito to see if the experience was really that bad.  The burrito was ok but compared to the competition I felt cheated.  For the same price you can get more and 10x better tasting stuff at Lolita's or Cotixan.

Ugh, this place is way more greasy and more unhealthy than Chipotle! Their California Burrito alone can induce a heart attack! The prices are alright, but it's not a place I'm a fan of. The biggest pro of this place is that it's open 24 hours, that's pretty much it.

Marc S. has it right -- the quality of the food at this Roberto's is higher than the one just down the street.  I would have liked a salsa bar, but the bean tostada was nice and crispy and loaded with beans, and the cheese enchilada was delicious.  Some horchata to wash it all down and call it a day.  They don't have an extensive menu, but what you can order is sure to be good.

Avoid the crowds and avoid the lines, this is the place to get your late night mexican cravings.

You also DON'T have to look at the reflective oil on the bottom of your box after you devour your fries/nachoes.  The burritos also feel a little more dry, probably due to the less oil comared to the other  Robertos down the street.

This one also accepts credit card as long as it's over $5-6.

Not to be confused with the Roberto's down the street, this is the closest one to UCSD and though they don't have the salsa and hot carrot bar like the other one, I like their quality and prices here a bit better.  Carne Asada Burrito will run you $4.50 with tax, almost double what I paid 10 years ago when in college, but still a great deal.  The meat, the guac, the hot sauce all first rate.  Everything made to order.  They just remodeled so the tables and tiling on the walls are a bit classed up, but they still have a faded photo from the early 80's showing the food on the menu, still have this pathetic plant on a wheeled pot in the corner, and still have the obligatory gun arcarde game (actually 2 of them) for the drunks to pass the time while waiting for their order.  Almost reason enough to live in San Diego.
