The Thai wrap is awesome. I asked the (extremely friendly and helpful) woman at the counter what she recommended, and while everything sounded appealing, I settled on the Thai. She said it's made with a wheat-based protein, and I thought it tasted much better than a lot of the rubbery soy products out there. The sauce was delicious and the little side salad that came with it was a nice bonus.

Thank you to the Kind Folks at Roots for being who you are and serving the excellent, thoughtful food that you do with a smile.

Thank you for not serving it with tableware that is made from virgin paper and landfill-clogging plastic.

Thank you for your delicious Greek Wrap, Thai Peanut Wrap, Raw Wrap....... for your always-fresh wraps that never explode.  I hope you continue to add new, creative items to your menu so it stays interesting for regulars like me.

Thank you for taking the time to be creative with your drinks, for your fresh, seasonal lemonades and horchatas of the day.

OB, San Diego, the world, and I are better because of you.

Just tried this place out and it was delicious. My super picky veggie, holistic brother was in town and I wanted to take him somewhere he wouldn't scoff at.  We both got sandwiches and they were so good and huge! I could barely finish it.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but, supposedly, they buy all their produce from local farmers. I think that's great!  If you want to sit indoors, they have a few tables set up in Rock, Paper, Scissors too.

If I could snap my fingers and eat anywhere in San Diego for lunch I would choose to eat at Roots.  Their food is beautiful. They use local and organic foods.  They are very "green" and use biodegradable supplies.  They also donate 5% of their profits to environmental organizations.  Their menu is small but fabulous (salads/sandwiches/wraps/drinks).  They have ingredients like hummus, portobella, avocado, mock chicken, artichoke, peanut butter/jelly, carrots, apples, yogurt, granola, salsa/chips, fruit, tea, soy milk and even fresh flowers!

Roots is a couple blocks from the beach on Newport.  I love how you order your food through a window.  You have the option to sit outside on Newport or inside at one of the cute little tables which are in the corner of "Rock, Paper, Scissors"

Kind Food For Kind Folks.  Love it!  Go there the next time you are in OB.

good food, good service, outdoor seating, what could be better?

tried the Thai Peanut Wrap with mock "chicken" and it was good. very good. Whole wheat wrap as well. score! I'm assuming the mock is Soy Chunks, really did taste like chicken. The sauce is what makes this, it's awesome. I love a good peanut sauce.

Even comes with a small little flower inside. Just so you know, not edible, or if they are, very bland for my palette.

Should be 5, but -1 star b/c the food did take a bit, so if you're not in a hurry, check them out, you won't regret

note to self, they also cater

It's a tiny hole in the wall place--literally--but Roots has charm and great food and smiling service.  I was wandering down during the OB farmer's market last week and found myself hankering for a mocha.  Fortunately, Roots was right there, and the friendly worker behind the counter made my drink, engaged in pleasant conversation, and admitted that it was a bit claustrophobic working in such a small space; however, she did it with cheer, happiness, and a great sense of calm.  I really enjoyed myself there, and I'll have to come back.

Excellent food. Wonderful staff. Casual atmosphere that is just right for OB. Biodegradable flatware. I had the Thai Peanut Wrap and fresh lemonade. Excellent! My wife had the Portobello Sandwich and declared it to be her favorite of all time!

The Healthiest food in OB and possibly all of San Diego.  Each time I visit the friendly people at Roots I'm continually impressed with the quality and freshness of the food.  You really do get your moneys worth because everything is made from scratch with locally sourced produce, most of which comes from the OB farmers market and locally baked bread!

My favorite sandwich is the Thai Peanut wrap with "mock" chicken.  It's so delicious and even comes with a little salad!  Awesome!  Make sure you try the horchata to quench your thirst, and finally, finish off your meal with the "Hippie Bar".  Trust me, while the name implies nuts and berries and something without flavor, the actual treat is loaded with chocolate and is moist, satisfying and delicious.  You can now eat indoors as well as outdoors so Roots is a great choice in any weather.

Kudos go out to these folks for their use of environmentally friendly packaging for to-go items.  We are talking about recycled napkins, cups made from corn starch which are biodegradable, and the list goes on.  They go the extra step to be a sustainable business and it shows.

seriously, I can actually say that roots is my fave place to grub in san diego. the little tiny cafe sits on newport ave is home to about 5 outdoor tables perfectly placed to soak up the ob sun, people watch, and read the sunday paper or that engrossing book you just can't seem make time for.

the food is excellent. just thinking about the thai peanut wrap makes me drool. my food always comes out fresh, delicious and looks as if the food artist literally placed each sliver of carrot, each jicama stick, and each flake of cilantro one at a time to create perfect balance of flavors and colors. Not to mention that a beautiful fresh flower always adorns the top of my dish, and has been place there by one of the friendly staff that dote on the customers just enough to make sure we are all happy.

Plus, the take away containers are all biodegradable and the food is all locally sourced. Roots wants to have minimal impact on the environment, but maximum impact on the taste buds. And all of this for seriously small change. I always leave my table in the sun a bit brighter, happier and healthier then when I first sat down.

i spotted this "hole in the wall" almost immediately while walking down the main drag in ocean beach. after reading their logo "kind food for kind folks", i automatically knew they were veggie. i had the veggie burrito and a strawberry horchata. i was in the process of ordering a side salad but the lady advised me that it came with a salad (nice of her). the drink had traces of fresh flowers and strawberry seeds - very delicious. it even caught the eye of my non-veggie friends. the price was very reasonable for a "vegetarian" establishment and the service was great. i live in long beach but i think i'm destined to eventually settle in ocean beach ... right next to the Roots.

Stopped here on a blazing hot Saturday afternoon.  The fresh blood orange and grapefruit juice cooled me right down and tasted amazingly good!  The strawberry horchata was also great  Danielle, one of the owners took a few minutes to introduce my friend and I to the Roots menu.  Super fresh mostly local and organic ingredients made by friendly people served on biodegradable to-go products.  The hummus wrap ($7) was my favorite!  The thai peanut wrap ($7.5) was amazing!  Both come with a beautiful salad (topped with a fresh flower) and some great dressing.  You won't leave hungry either......those burritos are HUGE!!
Make sure and check out what's for dessert.  We had a Chocolate "Mousse" made from avocados (which you would NEVER taste), that came topped with organic nuts and a tropical flower.  The chocolate was so creamy and decadent!  Delicious!
Out door seating on the sidewalk and Indoor seating in the adjoining art store.
Go, go now!
