Yummy!!! The beef sticks are soooo goood! This is one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in San Diego. It's more like Japanese street fare in a restaurant setting. Everything is served on small plates with two skewers per plate. They have a menu with pictures so you know what you're getting. There's also two lists on the wall with favorites for the American and Japanese palates. Very cool place!

2nd fave restaurant in SD. Nowhere else will more animals die for your gastronomic pleasure, at such a low price. Hell of carbon footprint, for about $40.......for two!
Must haves:
Takawasa
Rolled pork w/shiso
Beef tongue
hatsu
hell....just get one of everything.

Great food--beef sticks are fantastic

Service was WEIRD. We were very neglected and she forgot an order.

Poridge very good, chicken thighs very good. Sake pretty good---good selection.

Will go back and update.

If there was a way to give 3.5 stars then that's what I'd give it.

The good:
Absolutely delicious food
Authentic Japanese street style food

The bad:
NOT ENOUGH FOOD (pricey if you eat a lot)
Usually a long wait

I'm a huge eater so that's why I didn't give it five stars. Me n my friend dropped $50 total and I wasn't close to full at all. Delicious food, tiny appetizer sized Yakitori. If portions aint a concern for you, then go for it this place is bomb.

Holy skewered meat, Batman!

Why, why did I wait so long to try you out? My apologies, Yakitori... I shall never doubt again.

This was by far the most original, and one of the more delectable meals I have had in a long while. TRY THE SPECIALS!! Take a step away from your garlic-salt-grease comfort zone and experience a new gustatory goodies - quail eggs, BBQ chicken liver, squid... and when you've had enough, come back down to your comfort food zone with sweet potato fries and fried garlic.

Also try: Fried tofu, fried oysters = double your YUM

Not a huge fan of the shiitake with cheese... I mean really?? Meh...

Servers were a bit slow, but the chefs were blazin fast... Overall enjoyable evening. Love the portions, love the price, wish the place was a bit larger... Arigato, Yakitori!!

Meats on sticks? Where do I sign up? I love that this place is in my neighborhood, and I love it even more for being open late. The bowls are yummy and and I love the smoky flavor that comes from the charcoal. This place is definitely on the rotation.

Chicken hearts? Beef tongue? Sounds kinda gross right? Well sack up and try something new for a change. I did. And it was damn well amazing. By far, the best Japanese BBQ I've ever had.

This place isn't for the unadventurous, so take your granny panties some place else.

It's most popular dish, the chicken hearts, warm YOUR heart with each bite. It tastes even better when follow it with a swig of Orion (imported from Okinawa...where Mr. Miyagi is from). And if you're such a pussy where you can't get over the "hearts" or "tongue" part,  you won't go wrong w/ the bbq beef.

5 stars. hands down.

5 angie yum yums for Yakitori.  I'm officially addicted to their beef skewers until I eat too much of it and get sick.  I'm also a rice porridge lover, whether Chinese, Filipino, or Japanese, it's all damn good!  They all give their special flava and the water-rice consistency is slightly different for each but it's angie approved!  Especially good when it's cold or you have a cold.

I read about this place a few weeks ago and have been dying to try it since!

My friend and I were driving around Hillcrest trying to find an open Sushi spot at 12am but lucky us, we found Yakitori Yakyudori! And it was OPEN!

I love the authenticity of these kinds of restaurants, and always get that warm fuzzy feeling when I walk into a Japanese restaurant and am greeted in Japanese: Irashaimase!!! Big plus for that because it reminded me of Kappo Honda and Honda-Ya in Orange County (my 2 favorites!)

I ordered the beef tongue, chicken breast, and bacon wrapped asparagus. All were really tasty and perfectly cooked. I ordered a soju calpico to drink, but our server forgot it (that's the only reason I took off a star)- she was very apologetic though and quickly brought it out. I was kinda sad though cuz I didn't see agedashi tofu on the menu :(

I loved that they served my favorite Japanese beer (Orion) there!!!! They also had Sapporo and Asahi, but it's rare to find a place that serves Orion! I wish I had seen it before I ordered my soju calpico, but I will definitely be back for more Yakitori Yakyudori goodness.

My new love in life... Well that would be Beef Radish of coarse!!!!

If you're looking for a truly authentic Japanese experience... come one come all to Yakitori!  So many lovely things to choose from.  My recommendation is to just order, don't think about it, you'll never know until you try!  Even though I love the chicken gizzards, geso (ocotopus), chicken heart, shitake mushrooms, etc... you don't know what you are missing if you don't try the beef radish!  It's like a party in your mouth :)

Great for a date if you are on the adventurous side and want to see how your date will react to stepping outside of the box!

Been here a couple of times. The food was great and inexpensive as was the beer.

If you are daring and want to try some new foods, or just want to be like Andrew Zimmerman then this is also for you. Lots of stuff I did not know existed but all tasty.

Yakitori Yakydori is an experience! It's not your traditional order-a-bento type of place. It's more of an a-la-carte where you order small 2-3 dollar meals. It's an awesome dining experience on skewers. All quality stuff. The chicken skins are awesome and so are the chicken hearts. A couple rounds of those and an Orion Beer and you've satisfied your oral fixation.

Made a reservation on Sunday evening July 27 2008 for 8 pm dinner.  The Japanese crowd while we were there were a little rowdy.  I just think they have been drinking alot of beer and sake since if I am not mistaken they have Happy Hour here at Yakitori Yakyudori.

Service was prompt and fast.  Our server was Miki.

Love this place, I wish I could give them 5 stars.  Here is the thing... I love the Takoyaki (Octopus Balls) to be slightly in bigger portion. Coz that is what I am used to eating them back in Singapore.  Though I cant deny I ordered like 3 sets of Takoyaki!!!

For dinner, I had the squid, chicken liver, gizzard, heart, shishamo, eringi mushroom, mushroom with cheese, Virgin Blueberry Calpico, and another round of Calpico.

I love the Shishamo, coz the skewered fish comes with little fish roe in them.  That I love!!  The rest of the meal, just melts in my mouth.  I wish I could order more by the end of the evening meal, but by the time comes for my dessert, I am stuffed.

I love the dessert they call it white cake.  Its a passionfruit, raspberry, mango sorbert formed into a ball-like and covered or dip in WHITE chocolate.  The white chocolate is drizzled with milk chocolate.  DELISH!  Definitely, a sweet note to end the lovely evening.

Definitely coming back to Yakitori Yakyudori when we pay Cali a visit.

I brought my boyfriend here because he had never tried it and I had yet another amazing experience.  We ordered gyoza, chicken hearts, beef tongue, pork with shiso (didn't like the plum sauce), pork toro, beef with radish, takoyaki and thei ice cream "cake" dessert.   The reason I'm updating my review is because I've come to the conclusion that the takoyaki, pork toro, and beef tongue are must have dishes if you come here.  Everything is good, but those are my favorites.  And we got all that food plus 2 beers for less than $50.  This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the city especially when factoring in what you get for the price.

Dear Yakitori Yakyudori,

I have visited you several times over.  I have a bone to pick with you.  I sit down and take in your delectable food/drink.  I take in the aroma of good food being cooked over your grill.  I try my best to read your menu and decipher what I'm going to eat.  I hate you Yak.......You feed me with such good foods that I get too full that I can't eat or try everything I want to on one visit.  You give me a bad stomach ache for eating too much.  I blame you for offering the notorious 6x6x6...sign of the devil!.....6 beef skewers....6 chicken....6 pork skewers.   Not to mention your bacon wrapped asparagus which prolly right now is clogging my arteries just thinking about it.  Speaking of chicken....why do you torture with me with the option of chicken breast or thigh?  You know I'm a breast man  *wink wink*....but your thighs are so juicy and succulent.   whoa...tmi...

I will conquer you Yak....I will try your infamous quail eggs w/cheese and grilled shitake mushrooms.  Do I dare try the chicken hearts and gizzards?  I don't know.

I'm mad at you.  You don't write... you don't call... you're not open during lunch on certain days.....

But that's ok...cuz in the end I still love you.

Call me.

Meat on a stick... Hillcrest's dream come true!

Not to mention their food is delicious. I've only been here a couple of times; this place might be worth going to every time I have a craving for chicken wings -- that's fairly often now. Don't be afraid to try some of the stranger items on the "Japanese Top 10" chart. There's a reason those things are popular.

Oh my gosh...I never new yakitori could be sooo satisfying!

Chicken cartilage:  Soooooooo good!
Chicken liver:  So soft and rich
Chicken gizzard:  I like the light seasoning
Chicken heart:  a bit on the salty side
Chicken meatball:  soft and very good
Beef tongue:  A-MA-ZING

There were a bunch of other things we ordered but I don't remember what.  Basically, everything was good and it wasn't too expensive.  I really wish that we had seen the combo skewers at the beginning but we were too hungry to see any of that.

I also got the lemon soju, it was okay, a light lemon taste.  The grapefruit looked really good though =d

Sooo good!

Very inexpensive Japanese BBQ and open till 1am!  Can't really beat that at all.  Asparagus wrapped in bacon, and the beef stick are really good as well as all of the other items on the menu.

Try out the Japanese menu on the wall if you dare!

So this was my first time to really try Yakitori so i didn't know what to expect really, but i was excited.  We got lots of food here.  We tried the Chicken Cartilage, Chicken Thighs, Chicken meatballs, the Shiso roll thing, beef, fried yam, calamari, gyoza, and takoyaki.

Most were pretty good, I think some you need to have an acquired taste to appreciate.  The fried yams were kind lame...they were just like yam french fries... I wanted to try some more crazi stuff like chicken hearts and gizzard, but no one else wanted to try w/me....=(

Overall it was a fun and interesting experience.  The stuff wasn't too expensive.  We had 4 ppl and our total w/out sake was $55.  They have happy hours where the food is like $2, i didn't see when it was though.

4 stars just because I'm harsh about my stars :).

They specialize in skewers with a few other appetizers to suit your wants.  They also have a good large selection of alcoholic beverages including sake.

They get one star for good quality service.  It is a small hole in the wall with usually 2-3 servers.  Not hard to hail down a server for some water.

Another star plus a half for menu item.  My boyfriend and I have two total different type of taste buds so I always look for a restaurant that I would enjoy and that he wouldn't mind joining me at either.  He enjoys chicken and fish (because they are more healthy than beef).  Nothing too oily or slimy texture.  He is very consistent in his meals.  I, myself on the other hand, love to try new entrees.  Liver, heart, eyeballs, throw whatever you want at me, I'll try it as long as it's edible.  They won my heart tonight because they had bakudan (fried garlic, one of my bf's herbs), edamame (soybean), gyoza, agedashi tofu (they had called it homemaid tofu), and a whole bunch of different items that HE can eat.  Joy to the world!  I can go there again!  I ordered hatsu (chicken heart), suna (gizzards), and other items that churned my bf's stomach just hearing the name of.  I took off half a star because they use teriyaki sauce.  I don't like teriyaki sauce in my food until after I sample it and know what it is I'm eating.  some places like to cover up their food in lots of sauce, I don't appreciate that.  No sauce until I'm satisfied with my food.

Moving on...another star for atmosphere.  The lighting is not too bright nor is it too dark.  I dislike dark restaurants because I have a problem looking at the menu and at the dish in front of me.  In my opinion, the only reason why the lights are dark is because the restaurant is trying to hide something from me, that they would not want me, the customer, to see.  I also dislike bright lighting because it'll blind me if i look up.  So I say, lighting matters a lot to me in a restaurant.  Also, it's very relaxing, servers are not trying to turn over tables quickly to get a higher customer intake, but they rather let the customers take their time and enjoy their sake and skewers.  They are semi-traditional in their attitudes, but how traditional can you be outside of Japan?  They're doing a good job by greeting you when you walk in and when you walk out.  That's traditional enough for me.  I don't need traditional, I just need good food and service.

half a star for menu prices.  It is not expensive, but it is not cheap.  For small portions it has a decent price for the amount, but thinking about what you're eating...they're charging you a lot more than what they're putting out.  Of course they are a restaurant, so they will in order to make money and survive.

Overall, this place is decent, I like it.  I will be back again, and so will my boyfriend.  However, for folks who always wonder about this following information, be warned.

they are open from 6pm-1am monday-sunday except tuesday, they are closed on tuesdays.  I've been there at 6ish before, you need reservation or unless if you're willing to wait 30mins-1hour.  After 7 or so, reservation or not, they will usually be able to seat you without too long of a wait.  The reason why it's so crowded when they first open is because they just open and a lot of people are already waiting for dinner and because they have happy hour from 6pm-7pm.

I spent $40 the first time tipped $15.
Spent $33 the second time, tipped $11.

I may be picky, but I tip decent.

I'll start off with first saying that I don't eat any meat except for seafood.  I absolutely love Yakitori.  My favorite item on the menu is the Sake Chazuke.  It's the perfect amount of rice, soup and salmon.  I also really like the shrimp skewers.  My friends thought I was crazy the first time we went there, but I was able to find items that I love.  Their menu is full of traditional Japanese items that one might think to be odd.  However, from what my friends have experienced, those items are quite delicious. The people that run the place are quite friendly and always accomodating. Maybe it's because the people I go with, are regulars. And by regulars I mean once a week, sometimes three times.  If you're in the mood for something different, and you're feeling adventurous, definitely give this place a try.  All this talking and thinking about it, makes me want it now. JUST GO!

Yum!  How have I lived here this long and not found this sooner!  The only complaint: After the meal, we felt a little low on veggies... the only option we could remember from the menu board was bacon wrapped asparagus...  but oh my, those beef sticks are so tender and yummy!  The lists on the wall cracked us up - The top food orders for American patrons and the top orders for Japanese patrons.

This is serious business folks. I mean DAMN GINA! Seriously, the food here is absolutely fantastic.  Everything is prepared well, quickly, and by waitresses (waitri?) so damn cute, you just wanna put 'em in your pocket and take 'em home! By the way, the Soju cocktails are wonderfully refreshing. Prices are moderate.

Yakitori Yakyudori - how do I luv thee, let me count the ways.  Maybe its because everytime I go there I get inebriated to that oh so happy tipsy/drunk point on green apple sake (it goes down like the tastiest apple juice then all of a sudden HEY I'm drrrrrunk!)  Maybe its because its Japanese food at its best - simple, tasty, and weird- that takes me back to my childhood.  But no.  Its because its meat on a stick.

I really don't know how people can not like it.  Meat - good.  Fire - good.  Sauce - good. Alcohol - gooooood.  In Tokyo the best yakitori is meat simply grilled and that's what they have here.  You can really taste the difference from the Japanese charcoal.  Each plate comes with 2-4 skewers depending on what you get; some have sauces, others are just grilled with salt and pepper.  The fried goods are delicious too; I have to say I think that fried chicken from Asian restaurants are the tastiest and their teriyaki chicken wings would make the Colonel weep.

Two lists on the wall split into Japanese and American favorites are a big help to the less adventurous, so are the menus with photos.  The detailed sake descriptions are also good.  If you need help you can always ask your server, they're more than happy to help (those who can't take that the Japanese server have accents - bite me, let's see what you sound like trying to speak another language, probably like the ignorant douche you are.  And um hello ever heard of point at what you want on the menu?  Everyone understands what you want when you point at it).

Me I like to pick blind from the menu and see what I get.  Find some surprises both good and bad.  The wausau (chicken skin) sounds interesting but its boiled not fried - although I do want to ask them sometime if they would fry it up or grill it up I bet it'd be yummy - so you have to be prepared for cold, gelatinous texture of chicken skin.  Its an acquired taste.  Two thumbs up for the beef, beef with daikon radish and ponzu sauce, pork, asparagus bacon (what's not good with bacon?), shu mai, gyoza, takoyaki, geso, teriyaki chicken wings, yakinikku, and pork shiso.  The permutations are endless.  It can get pricey but last time, without the 3 bottles of sake that brought our bill to over $100 it would have been $30 for the food alone and that's for 3 people.

Can't find parking?  Go around the block behind the church.  Its a block dude.  I wouldn't highly recommend it for birthdays since seating is limited, but its definitely a great place to meet up with friends.  Make reservations because it gets packed quickly and don't make any plans afterwards because 9 times out of 10 you'll be too drunk to go to your next destination.

This place is very interesting. Off of the main street in a little strip mall, its like the only thing on the block open late, and there's always parking. I've been there twice in the past couple of weeks, we go at about 11 o'clock and order sake and food until maybe 1 AM. I think the concept is really cool, small plates that everyone can share, and I think most of them are exceptional. Everyone that works there is very Asian, and extremely nice and understanding, but I do feel like they try to push food + drinks on you a little bit (but people usually continue to order, so maybe they're just thinking ahead!!!). The sake selection is also really good, but by the end of the night it gets a little sparse (they may just be wanting to push the more expensive sakes though) and sometimes they'll give you these really cool glasses that have a hole cut out of the middle for ice cubes to go in. The food choices are great and you have to come try it at least once, if it's not your thing then don't go back, but it's cheap enough to try once. They have a picture menu, with very unique items such as chicken tendons, beef tounge, pork stomach, etc. etc. All totally dank. Also they have daily specials, when I went last I tried the sweet potato fries... OMG so excellent!!!! So go for the experience, stay for the sake, and fill up on the food !!  =)

I love this place!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a good idea to call for reservations. Everything I have had here is delicious. The staff are great and always helpful. My favorite items are quail eggs in brown sauce, chicken hearts, beef,  pork, chicken skewers, asparagus wrapped bacon. It is inexpensive and it fills you up. Had great sake recommended to us and threw a few back with the cook.
You don't have to be that adventurous to eat here there are traditional items. But you should try something that you wouldn't normally. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Parking sucks but you usually can find parking across the street at the bank (have to pay), or the block behind where the private school is.

Yummy. Yummy.  The octopus balls are seriously absolutely delicious. Be adventurous and try stuff you never thought you would eat. It's a great place to go with a group and just order a bunch of stuff to share.

The black sesame ice cream is fantastic and, really, who doesn't like meat on a stick. On the downside, parking can suck and it can be a little loud and crowded, but the food is fabulous and the staff is great.

"Beef sticks" as my friend Ger would say.

#1 on the favorites for American palates is the beef stick so you know it's good.

I recommend the combo to maximize your value.  You get rice and salad along with a couple selections of either beef, chicken, or something else.  The charcoal they use to cook their stuff really gives everything a great flavor.  There are some basic things on the menu that once grilled, taste superb.  Beef, for example.

Other notables include:

-Rolled Pork Shiso
-Mushroom and Cheese
-Squid
-Grilled Garlic (so simpo.. yet so good)
-Black Sesame Ice Cream (only one of two places I've found in San Diego that serves this mystical dessert)

Prices are decent.  It definitely adds up if you want to try a bunch of things or if you get hooked on those beef sticks.  I hear there's a happy hour but have yet to take advantage of it.

Service has always been excellent and attentive.  You can imagine in a place where they serve things like octopus balls and chicken skin ("smooth as a baby's bottom" - i think they took that sign down though ha) that a customer might have questions about what they are getting.  The servers will help you figure it all out.

If I had to knock anything about the place it'd be the location and the weirdish hours (Why do I always feel like going to this place on Monday and Tuesday evenings?? - when it's closed)  And parking can be difficult to find as well.

Yakitori Yakudori is one of very few yakitori places I know of in San Diego and is always a treat to eat at.

Yakitori...

Yaki (grilled) tori (bird)...

This place is definately in my top 5 places to eat in SD....period....Why I say this you ask?  3 simple reasons:

Bomb food!  Great service!  Open Late!

The food selection is very plentiful which includes your typical (beef, chicken, pork) and not-so typical (gizzard, tongue, and hearts) choices....To a lot of people...this can be quite overwhelming, but fortunately there are 2 lists on the wall that give you the top 10 American choices and top 10 Japanese choices...I tend use those lists as a starting point....

All the food is cooked on bamboo skewers over special charcoal which in my opinion is the reason why the food comes out extra flavorful!  Hmmm....If its your first time I highly recommend trying one of there combination choices to get a good variety of meats and also some individual dishes such as the quail eggs and cheese, pork shiso, and my personal favorite...the asparagus wrapped in bacon....oh yeah!

If you know you are going to have a party of more than 2-4 people....I HIGHLY suggest to make reservations in advance...The place is small with limited seating, and since the food comes out in smaller portions and the menu being so extensive..people end up ordering and trying new things throughout the course of there dinner, thus leading to longer wait times..

Also...even though each individual food item is generally inexpensive ( approx..$2.50 to $4.00 per item)...it can add up FAST!!..Remember...smaller, yummier, portions + fast sevice = a full, satisfied stomach...and also an empty wallet...

Pro's:  - Great Food!
           - Great Service!
           - Great Drink Selection!
           - Open Late (1am)

Con's:  - Parking is difficult during the weekend...but can always pay to
park at the Rite Aid across the street..
             - Earliest it opens is at 6pm, Wed to Sun...

Damned you YELP. This is the ONE spot I was going to keep as my little secret, to avoid the whole waiting in line thing. I don't want the same thing to happen here that happened to Turf Club. Next thing you know, Y.Y. will be packed wall to wall with tall, thin, tattooed rockers with nose rings and tight black jeans and red streaked hair coming for the hip scene rather than the food. With 47 reviews I guess the cat is out of the bag. So many reviews, the only thing I have to add is this:

The whole charcoal vs gas debate. If you think the bintochan charcoal doesn't make a difference, eat here. TASTE. You will see.....

Meat on a stick!!  I mean seriously doesn't everything taste better when you cook it on a stick.
They have a great variety and super friendly staff.  Take a chance and eat from the "Japanese Favorites" menu to find a tasty surprise.

This spot takes me back to the streets of Tokyo! Man, this place has delicious takoyaki, agedashi tofu and almost anything on a stick. While I may not be a fan of hatsu - you're gonna have to find out just what hatsu is on your own - I am a huge fan of Yakitori. Just the smell of the place makes my mouth water! That charcoal goodness is too much for a girl to take! Yakitori wa ichiban desu yo!!!

My wife and I checked out this restaurant last Friday for our weekly date.  We made reservations for 7pm and the place was surprisingly not packed yet.  When we left around 8:15, there was a line out the door though :)

We ordered lots of food, beef, pork, fish, chicken sticks with various sauces and dips.  All were cooked to perfection, but the standard beef sticks and the rolled pork with shizu were our favorites.  The ambience was refreshing and the waiters and servers were cheery and polite.  We only wish they were closer to where we lived.

Parking can sometimes be troublesome, but there is 2 dollar parking a few storefronts south and 1 dollar parking across the street.

After reading all the raving reviews, I knew I had to try this place. I went with a lady friend and upon walking in at about 8 pm, they said it would be about a 30 min wait, however to our pleasant suprise the wait took only about 15 min. The staff is very friendly, even to white folk who are open to a new experience. We tried the chicken heart, chicken liver, chicken gizzard, chicken thigh with onions, and shrimp and chicken dumplings.  My favorite would have to be the chicken heart and the chicken thigh. Besides having great flavor, all of the skewers came out super hot like you were taking the right off the grill at home. I ordered a Kirin draft to wash down my meal and they brought it in basically a frozen glass, not jut frosted, frozen!! Whenever my beer was reaching the bottom, they brought me a new one. Any place that has great food, great service, and always keeps your glass full is top notch in my book. Other restaurants should seriously take notes from this place.

Hai! Oishi desu! The selection Yakitori boasts is widely varied, from chicken heart to mushroom, and from mushroom to tofu...etc. There are other delicacies that I cannot remember but I am pretty darn sure they have liver, guts, and such. I rarely comment on this... but their rice is really good, for some reason. It glistens and is so chewy!

Service is not bad. Of the time I visited, the waiters were polite and prompt with our service. The wait is manageable (15-20minutes).

Price is a tad on the expensive side. Since you only get 3-5 tiny pieces on each skewer, all the items you order will add up. Don't be too shocked when the tab comes out. Personally I don't mind dropping a bit more Benjamins here since there are few places in SD like this.

Parking is not terribly easy to find. You just have to drive around for a bit before locating a good spot.

Definitely check it out. Try not to wear black or else you might end up smelling like roasted chicken. My favorite is definitely the chicken heart--so get it! They have both Japanese and American favorites listed on their wall so check those out as well.

I can't believe I ate cow tongue and thought it was really good.  I've never eaten so much meat in one meal in my life.  It was amazing though.  I had never been to an asian bbq restaurant like this before, but it was great and I would highly recommend it.  Don't go if you are vegetarian because they specialize in meat.  Beef, Chicken & Fish.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  We had a big party of 10 people and they were very accomodating.
