Daddy's Junky Music and Guitar Center both selled used equipment, but your best bet is craigslist.  Any retail store, obviously, will up the price.  For browsing purposes, the Guitar Studio on Boylston near the Pru is a fun spot.  Don't think they sell used stuff though.  www.samash.com, as well as guitarcenter.com and www.daddys.com, have a used gear section of their website as well, all seller to buyer direct, I think. and ebay of course.  local is probably best though, you want to vibe with a guitar first before you call it your own.

Thanks for the advice Julie - I've been looking on Craigslist but it seems everyone that has something worthwhile to sell lives way out in the suburbs or beyond, which makes it hard for me without a car (yes, I know - someday, I'll get around to signing up for ZipCar). The Guitar Studio is nice if you're ready to drop $1000+, but as I'm just a beginner...

I think Daddy's or Guitar Center, as you can pick up a NEW guitar for just over $100. It won't get you on tour with Coldplay, but it'll give you a taste for what you want. In both cases, you should only go when you're ready to make a purchase. You don't HAVE to buy, but you should be in the mindset of buying.

Then, when you get there and start looking, tell the first salesrockstar who asks you if you need help, tell them you're looking to buy an entry-level guitar and you're planning on spending $150-200 (or whatever). That'll give them the sense that 1.) you want to buy, and 2.) your price range. This way, they won't think you're just coming in to muck with the guitars and play Slipknot songs, and they also won't try to kit you up with $3500 worth of stuff.

Guitar Center has entry level electrics on sale for $99 right now (I went by there just yesterday).  Alternatively, if you're just looking for a cheap guitar on which to learn, you can build your own from a kit for pretty cheap.

Theres a spot on RUGG ROAD in Allston called the Musicians Gym.  Its a budget practice space for musicians... pretty cool spot.  You might wanna go in there and just put up a poster.  I'm sure someone has an extra guitar they'd be willing to part with!

I know I'm late to this conversation but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents...

Daddy's sucks - avoid it like the plague unless you're looking for plywood production stuff. Guitar Center is a step up, for sure.

The most kick-ass place is Cambridge Music Center in Porter Sq., though. Solid, used gear w/ good character.

There's also (or was, last I looked) a great place who's name I can't remember, just outside Davis Square on Highland Ave.

Finally, there's a brand-new place that just opened in the basement of a palce on the corner of Mass. Ave. and Arrow St. in Cambridge (just outside of Harvard Sq.)...
